While Silicon Valley is famous for tech innovation and wealth, there are low-income residents and a homeless population in California’s Santa Clara County that need access to healthcare. In 2020, the County urgently needed a space to treat the growing homeless population suffering from COVID-19 and attention turned to a derelict building in Morgan Hill as a candidate for revitalization into a healthcare clinic.

Originally built in 1985 as DePaul Medical Center, the building closed in 2000 and was vacant for 20 years. The County purchased it in an advanced state of decay with mold, broken windows and crumbling pipes.

Santa Clara County contracted the firm to oversee the transformation of this space into an outpatient urgent care center within 18 months. Work was expedited due to the pandemic, with the firm operating under a unique agreement to proceed without permits.
